Under pressure

Hemispherical nano-diamonds can now be used to create record-breaking pressure of more than 1 terapascal in a diamond anvil according to an international team. Natalia Dubrovinskaia and Leonid Dubrovinsky of the University of Bayreuth, Germany, and their colleagues suggest that being able to more readily generate such high pressures with control could open up new areas of high-pressure physics, solid state chemistry, materials science, geophysics, and astrophysics. 1 terapascal is about three times the pressure at the Earth's core.
